SALEM, OR — Oregon’s state parks agency is closer to deciding to ban smoking along ocean beaches. After four hearings on the issue over the summer, a very slight majority of those who commented support the ban. Staff are expected to make a recommendation this month. Oregon’s Parks and Recreation Commission plans to make a final decision in November. If approved, the smoking ban would apply to Oregon’s beaches, from the Columbia River to the California border.
Supporters said it would reduce secondhand smoke and litter. Opponents said it’s impossible to enforce and is an excessive use of power.
