Cougar Spotted Near La Pine

DCSO.STOCK.2LA PINE, OR — Those living near La Pine are warned to be on alert, after a cougar was spotted in the Tuesday evening.  A witness spotted a cougar hauling a deer carcass across State Recreation Rd., near the Little Deschutes River.  By the time Deschutes County Sheriff’s deputies responded, the big cat was gone.  The witness reported seeing the cougar running to the south.

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office has several tips to keep you and your family safe if a cougar is spotted near by:

  • Do not disturb dead animal carcasses especially if you believe the animal may be a cougar kill
  • If there are confirmed cougar sightings in your area do not walk your dogs at night
  • It is recommended that residents keep outside lighting in the areas where livestock is present to help deter cougar attacks
  • Supervise children and pets that are outside
  • If you do see or come into contact with wildlife such as a cougar, do not run, but move slowly, keeping the animal in view as you move away from the area

And if there is a perceived danger from a cougar or other wildlife, you are asked to contact local law enforcement as soon as possible.
