SALEM, OR — On Monday, Oregon State Treasurer Ted Wheeler presented to the Legislature the recommendations of the Retirement Security Task Force.
Those recommendations intent to increase access, enrollment, and savings by Oregonians.
“Half of private sector employees in the state of Oregon don’t have access to retirement plans through their place of employment and those who do are frankly saving too little,” Wheeler says.
Wheeler says the task force recommended a state-guided retirement plan that allowed for voluntary participation, that automatically activated upon employment, that followed the employee from job to job, and most importantly:
“…that the plan should be self-sustaining, meaning that it wouldn’t cost the taxpayers or employers anything.”
Wheeler adds that while the recommendations are still in their infancy and that no action will be legislated yet, he encourages Oregonians to contact their lawmakers.
“This is the right time for Oregonians to come to the table and have a conversation about it.”
