Chrysler Recalls Nearly 350,000 Cars for Ignition Key Problems

moodboard/Thinkstock(AUBURN HILLS, Mich.) — Chrysler Group is recalling nearly 350,000 older-model cars as a result of an ignition-key issue that may cause keys to become stuck or move on their own.

In an internal investigation announced Thursday, the company found that ignition keys on certain 2008 vehicles may not fully return to the “on” position after turning during engine startup.

While airbags are not affected, the action may result in loss of windshield defroster or wiper function, according to officials.

In extreme instances, the ignition key may inadvertently move to “accessory” or “off” positions, resulting in reduced braking power or loss of engine power, power steering, or the car’s safety features.

Chrysler cited one “minor incident” that may have been related to the issue, but said the company is unaware of any injuries.

2008 Dodge Charger sedans, Dodge Magnum station wagons, Chrysler 300 sedans, Jeep Commander, and Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs are among the 349,442 affected vehicles.

Customers will be notified when they can schedule free services, according to officials. In the meantime, drivers of the affected models are advised to detach ignition keys from key rings and ensure their keys are set in the “on” position after starting cars.
