PORTLAND, Ore. — An environmental group’s testing of Columbia River fish have yielded some troubling results..
The Oregonian reports that two walleye had high levels of PCBs, which are carcinogenic industrial chemicals that were banned in 1979.
One had 175 times more PCBs than the EPA guidelines allow for consumption.
That pair of walleye came from an area near Portland where state health officials already warn against eating resident fish.
However, tests on three migratory fish showed no unsafe levels of contamination.
Health officials say that’s because migratory fish don’t spend enough time in local contaminated waters to accumulate those levels of toxins.
