Wehby Denies Avoiding Merkley, Calls For Debates

Monica WehbyPORTLAND, Ore. — Monica Wehby insists she’s not trying to avoid a debate with Senator Jeff Merkley.

She challenged the senator to at least four debates before the November election.

Wehby and Merkley have already agreed to debate Oct. 14 in Medford on KOBI TV.

Wehby called for three additional debates proposed by KOIN TV, Oregon Public Broadcasting and the City Club of Portland.

In response, the Merkley campaign cast doubts on the seriousness of the proposal, wondering if Wehby would appear at the scheduled Medford debate.

“We’ll look at our campaign schedule, but right now we’re focused on what’s already on the books,” said Merkley spokesperson Lindsey O’Brien.

Last week, Wehby declined a televised debate and was a no-show at another.
