Officials say smoke will be highly visible near Wickiup Reservoir and the La Pine basin due to planned burns this week.

DESCHUTES COUNTY, Ore. — Wednesday marks the first day of burn season in Central Oregon.

Over 180 acres will be lit in a planned burn one mile southwest of Cascade Lakes Highway and Forest Road 44. Smoke will likely be visible from Wickiup Reservoir and the La Pine basin through Thursday.

Next week, a 130-acre burn will take place along Cascade Lakes Highway near the Lava Flow Campground. During that burn, the Lava Flow campground will be closed to ensure public and firefighter safety.

A flagger will be in place during the lighting of that burn. Motorists are encouraged to decrease speed and turn on headlights through all smoky areas.
