Governor Set To Sign Motor Voter Bill, Local Republican Tim Knopp Speaks Out

Salem, Ore. – Minutes after the state senate voted in favor of the House Bill that will allow people to become automatically registered to vote when they get a driver’s license, Governor Kate Brown praised the action.

“I applaud the Senate for passing House Bill 2177, Oregon’s Motor Voter bill,” said Governor Kate Brown. “Our goal is to make it as easy as possible for eligible voters to participate in our elections. As Secretary of State, the Motor Voter bill was my top priority, and I look forward to signing this bill into law.”

The Bill passed along party lines in both the House and Senate yesterday. Democrats are in flavor of the bill.

State Senator Tim Knopp of Bend spoke on the Senate Floor.

“We tried this in Central Oregon just last year. The reason people are not registering is because they in fact have a legitimate reason in their mind not to, and government forcing them to do that, I think is not right.”

Opponents also worry about security breaches and a lawsuit against the State if someones ID is stolen.

“So I would say be careful what you ask for, because you just might get it. I think this has the potential also to increase voter fraud.”
