Inmate Death In Eastern Oregon

Umatilla, Ore. – An inmate died unexpectedly Thursday evening at Two Rivers Correctional Institution in Umatilla. As with all unanticipated deaths in state prisons, the Oregon State Police Criminal Investigation Division is conducting an investigation.

Staff found inmate 70 George Phillip Murphy, Jr., in the infirmary unresponsive. Attempts were made to resuscitate him, and paramedics were called to the scene. Murphy was pronounced deceased at 7:10 p.m.

Murphy entered Oregon Department of Corrections (DOC) custody on September 30, 2004, on one count of sexual penetration in the second degree out of Coos County. His earliest release date was February 27, 2017.

Next of kin has been notified. No other details are available at this time.

TRCI is a multi-custody prison in Umatilla that houses approximately 1,800 male inmates. TRCI opened in 2000.
