Bend, Ore. – Peter Sears came to Oregon in 1974 to teach creative writing at Reed College, and has gone on to do many poetry workshops and readings at public schools, libraries, colleges, community centers and literary festivals throughout the state.
Deschutes Public Library is pleased to welcome Sears, Oregon’s Poet Laureate, for a workshop and a reading at Second Sunday, the Library’s monthly celebration of the written word. Workshop space is limited and registration is required. Second Sunday is free and open to the public. Books will be available for sale and an open mic follows reading.
The Oregon Poet Laureate fosters the art of poetry, encourages literacy and learning, addresses central issues relating to humanities and heritage, and reflects on public life in Oregon.
Sears was appointed on April 25, 2014, by Governor Kitzhaber. As Oregon’s seventh Poet Laureate Sears follows in the footsteps of notable Oregon poets including William Stafford, Paulann Petersen and Lawson Inada.
A graduate of Yale University and the Iowa Writers Workshop, Sears has served as Dean of Students at Bard College as well as Community Services Coordinator for the Oregon Arts Commission.
