County Holds News Conference Today On Inmate Death

Bend, Ore. – Deschutes County officials say a Portland martial arts instructor and sex abuse suspect did not appear to be suicidal. He was found dead in his cell early Sunday morning and the initial investigation is calling it a suicide.

35 year old Eben Kaneshiro of Portland was arrested about a week ago on alleged sex abuse charges involving a young boy in the Sisters area.

The man owned the New Breed Jiu-Jitsu Academy in southeast Portland, and detectives there were concerned there could be more victims and had asked anyone with information to contact Detective Darrell Miller at 503-823-0842.

Deschutes County District Attorney John Hummel says while they’ve initially ruled it to be a suicide, the case is not closed. An autopsy was is planned later today at the state medical examiner’s office.

Deschutes County officials also expressed their sympathy to friends and family at this morning’s news conference.
