Red Sox Call Up Top Prospect Blake Swihart

The 23-year-old Swihart comes up to replace catcher Ryan Hanigan who underwent surgery Saturday on the knuckle of his right pinkie finger.

Swihart started and hit ninth in the Red Sox 4-2 loss to the New York Yankees Saturday. The youngster went 1-for-3 with an infield single, a walk, and a run scored.

“I was definitely nervous, but I had to turn it into focus,” Swihart said. “I had a big job to do.”

Swihart, who the Red Sox selected with the 26th overall pick of the 2011 MLB June Amateur Draft, played in 18 games for Triple-A Pawtucket before the promotion. During that time, he hit .338 with no home runs, 11 RBIs, one stolen base, and a .392 on-base percentage.
