The North American Migration Count (NAMC) is a twice annual birding event that has been taking place throughout the continental United States since 1992. The two primary goals of the NAMC are to collect avian migration data and to get more people outside looking at birds! Unlike other yearly counts, this count is unique in that it takes place on a single day. The purpose of this to create a “snapshot” of the progress of spring migration.

By surveying for a single day, we can get a good image of the abundance and distribution of species of birds at a particular time. Long-term data will allow us to see migratory fluctuations between years and even decades. This information can then be used to inform decision makers on issues that pertain to birds. Currently, the information is being loaded into a database with the intention of analyzing it at a future date. This event is only made possible by all the volunteers who contribute their time to observe, document sightings, and report their results. These counts provide invaluable information, encourage collaboration and cooperation between birders throughout the United States, and are lots of fun to boot!
