Italian Captain Writes Book on Costa Concordia Tragedy

MariaAngelaCiucci/iStock Editorial/Thinkstock(NAPLES, Italy) — Sunken Truths is apparently non-ironic title of Captain Francesco Schettino’s new book on his version of what happened when the Costa Concordia cruise ship he was in charge of crashed into rocks off the coast of Italy in 2012.

Italians are outraged that Schettino has dedicated the book to the 32 people killed in the shipwreck and is profiting from the disaster.

Many have taken to Twitter, one asking, “What’s next? Making Schettino transportation minister?”

Schettino was condemned to 16 years in prison for multiple manslaughter and abandoning ship, but is free on bail while he appeals.

The captain left the ship long before most of the nearly 4,000 passengers were able to get off.

In the book, he repeats his claim that the wreck was caused by technical problems and not that he was distracted by the Maldavian dancer he brought aboard.
