Salem, Ore. – Today the Oregon House voted to ban toxic chemicals in children’s products. Rep. Knute Buehler, who was one of the sponsors of the legislation, spoke in support of the bill on the floor.

“Healthcare needs to focus on prevention and public health, instead of waiting to treat problems after they have appeared,” said Buehler. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

SB 478 requires the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) to maintain a list of high priority chemicals of concern for children’s products.

It also requires larger manufacturers to transition from dangerous chemicals to safe ones, giving them several years to come into compliance. The policy resembles similar legislation passed by Washington.
