Deschutes County Deputies Recognized

Bend, Ore. – According to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, two Sheriff’s Deputies completed the Corrections Academy at the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training, graduating on July 21st. Deputy Zach Childers and Deputy Jeff Woods tied for first place with the top academic scores in their academy class. Deputy Childers and Deputy Woods both had an average score of 97.07%.

Additionally, the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training awarded Deputy Zach Childers the Victor G. Atiyeh Outstanding Student award.

This award is named in honor of the former distinguished Governor of the State of Oregon. This prestigious award goes to the student in each basic class who is selected by students and academy staff as the most outstanding student in the class.

The student selected has displayed exceptional professionalism by demonstrating an exemplary attitude and outstanding achievement in leadership, academics, health and fitness, and survival skills. Further, this student is considered to embody the spirit and dedication of the class as a whole, representing the entire group, leading when needed, even if not asked, and representing the profession with a positive demeanor and outlook.

Deputy Childers and Deputy Woods were hired as Corrections deputies with the Sheriff’s Office on January 2, 2015. They are both graduates of Basic Corrections Class #BCL019 from the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training. Deputy Childers and Deputy Woods continue their education and training in the Corrections ranks of the Sheriff’s Office.
