Jury in James Holmes Trial Reaches Verdict in Sentencing Phase

ABC News(CENTENNIAL, Colo.) — The jury in the sentencing phase of the James Holmes murder trial has reached a verdict on all counts.

The verdict will be read Monday afternoon.

The jury reached its decision after deliberating for less than two hours.

If jurors decide that mitigating factors outweigh the aggravating factors, then the 27-year-old will be sentenced to life without parole.

If they do not, then the trial will be launched into a third phase where they will determine his sentence, with one option being the death penalty.

Last month, Holmes was convicted of killing 12 people and wounding 70 others at a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, Colorado on July 20, 2012.
