John Day, Ore. – The Canyon Creek Complex has grown to 101,465 Acres and is 49 percent contained.
Evacuations have been lifted for Prairie City south of the John Day River and Strawberry Road. That area and the area south and west of the 62 Road from Prairie City to the Forest Boundary is now in a level 2 evacuation. CR 62 and the 16 are open for through travel, at this time.
Early in the morning the fire became very active due to high winds and low humidity. It burned down through Shaw Gulch on the northeast flank and prompted evacuations south of the John Day River in Prairie City. Firefighters responded quickly with engines and dozers making a solid stand and kept the fire about 1 ½ miles from Prairie City.
Six National Guard units are assisting with firefighting efforts. They are currently working on mop up and assisting with suppression repair. State Fire Marshal’s task force will be providing additional structural protection.
A weak surface trough will follow the cold front that moved across Washington and Oregon yesterday. Wind gusts could be as high as 30 mph along ridgetops this aftternoon.
There is a 60% chance of afternoon showers and the temperature will be around 70. Locals can expect varying levels of smoke.
