Bend, Ore. – The Deschutes County District Attorney’s office, along with other Oregon DA offices, received a request to send victims’ assistance support to Douglas County in the aftermath of Thursday’s mass shooting at Umpqua Community College.
Two members of the Deschutes County Victims’ Assistance Program traveled to Roseburg yesterday afternoon and assisted in making nine preliminary death notifications to victims’ families. Today, they are providing support to victims and family members at the hospital in Roseburg.
“We will continue to support Douglas County in any way we can,” said Deschutes County District Attorney John Hummel. “Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this traumatic experience.”
The Deschutes County District Attorney’s Victims’ Assistance Program was established in 1994. The county’s five Victims’ Assistance Advocates help crime victims navigate the criminal justice system process and provide assistance that promotes establishing victim stabilization after crime occurs.
