Alexander Koerner/Getty Images(WOLFSBURG, Germany) — Could the Volkswagen emissions scandal threaten the automaker’s existence?

That’s what Volkswagen’s incoming chairman Hans Dieter Poetsch reportedly told managers this past week, calling it “an existence-threatening crisis.”

Germany’s Welt am Sonntag newspaper also reported that Poetsch thought the company could overcome the situation.

A few weeks ago, the automaker was hit by claims Volkwagen used software to evade emissions tests for its diesel vehicles, affecting 11 million car-owners around the world.

Advertisements across German media have the carmaker pleading for public trust again.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Sunday during a German radio program that Volkwagen must work fast to fix the situation, but she didn’t think there would be any long-term effects on Germany’s industry.
