Prineville, Ore. – Crook County Fire officials believe that about 575 thousand dollars in hay went up in smoke this morning.

Nearly 2,500 tons of hay were destroyed in the costly fire north of Prineville. Fire investigators believe it was probably sparked by spontaneous combustion.

Crook County Fire Chief Matt Smith says “Somebody noticed the glow” in the sky north of Barnes Butte and called authorities around 12:40 a.m.

Crews arrived and found three large haystacks fully involved in fire, and the hay will probably burn for a couple of days.

The 2500 tons of burned hay is worth roughly $230 a ton, so the losses total nearly $575,000.
