Roseburg, Ore. – Today Governor Kate Brown joined arms with Umpqua Community College leaders so show support for the college as it opened for the first day of classes since the shooting.

Brown says she is seeing a “level of support for UCC from every corner of Oregon, even the entire United States.”

“I think it’s so very important that students get back to class and back to studying and have a sense of normalcy in their lives…. But is there definitely a feeling of tentativeness, of concern, this morning.”

Brown says presidents and staff from some of the 16 other community colleges are also in Roseburg today to show their support.

UCC President Rita Cavin thanked the Governor for the support of the Governor’s office staff, local law enforcement and the federal delegation. The community also lined the road to the school in a show of support “we feel like we are in a bubble of love right now and we appreciate all the care.”

Cavin said some students skipped class today because they didn’t want to face the press. She assured them that the media presence will quickly diminish.
