Pregnancy and back pain often go hand in hand. In fact, 50 to 70 percent of pregnant women say they experience back pain at some point during their pregnancy.

Some of the common causes of the pain include excess weight, a change in the center of gravity and an increase in certain hormones, which can loosen joints.

When it comes to shoes, it’s recommended that pregnant women wear supportive ones with a small heel to help alleviate back pain. The slight rise of the low heel helps evenly distribute the weight that’s on your legs.

My prescription? Stay active during pregnancy. This is the best time to work out — and do both cardio and weight training.

And remember: Not all back pain during pregnancy is musculoskeletal. So if you experience any nausea, vomiting, fever, chills or bleeding, call your obstetrician right away.
