It was 30 years ago Saturday that Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, starring Matthew Broderick as the titular high school senior who plays hooky with his girlfriend and best pal, was released.
Ferris tricked his parents into believing he was sick, then headed to downtown Chicago, where he lip-syncs to “Twist and Shout” in a parade, took in a Chicago Cubs game at Wrigley Field, and generally had a great time while avoiding getting busted by his principal and sister.
Along for the ride were his girlfriend Sloane, played by Mia Sara, and his apprehensive friend Cameron, played by Alan Ruck.
The cast also included Jennifer Grey as Ferris’ sister, Jeannie; Jeffrey Jones as Ferris’ principal, Edward Rooney; Ben Stein as the teacher who famously called out the absent Ferris’ surname in class; and Charlie Sheen as a troublemaker Jeannie flirts with at a police station.
The John Hughes-directed comedy was one of the 10-highest-grossing movies of 1986, earning more than 70 million dollars at the domestic box office, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com.
