Official White House Photo by Pete Souza(WASHINGTON) — Vice President Biden has mostly stayed away from the campaign trail since announcing he wouldn’t put his own foot in the race in October of last year.
But Biden is set to go head on after Donald Trump, according to excerpts from a speech scheduled Monday afternoon to the Center for New American Security’s Annual Conference.
While he doesn’t use Trump’s name, the excerpts show Biden hit Trump for having the “attitude and insecurity of a bully.”
“Adopting the tactics of our enemies — using torture, threatening to kill innocent family members, indiscriminately bombing civilian populations — not only violates our values, it’s deeply damaging to our security,” Biden will tell the conference. “Wielding the politics of fear and intolerance — like proposals to ban Muslims from entering the United States or slandering entire religious communities as complicit in terrorism — calls into question America’s status as the greatest democracy in the history of the world.”
Recently, Biden joined Sen. Elizabeth Warren in going after Trump’s attacks against the federal judge presiding over his Trump University fraud case. But the Monday speech is the most direct he has been in staking out the choice he sees Americans face at the ballot box in November.
“If we turn inward, undermine our most important relationships, or seek sound-bite solutions in a world defined by complexity,” Biden will say. “If we forget who we are, betray our values, and embrace intolerance, we will squander all of our hard-earned progress.”
According to the excerpts, Biden also doesn’t mention Trump’s Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton by name, instead praising the Obama administration’s “ability to lead by example and draw partners to our side.”
“That’s what has always made America great,” Biden will say. “Not empty bluster. Not a sense of entitlement that fundamentally disrespects our partners. Not the attitude and insecurity of a bully.”
