Using Fireworks – Safety First in Central Oregon

Bend, Ore. – With warm, dry weather and a 3-day weekend approaching, the Bend Fire Department reminds people to consider safety first around fireworks.

Any firework that explodes, flies more than 6 feet or jumps more than 12” in the air is illegal in Oregon.

The only fireworks that the temporary stands sell are legal ones.

With the dry fuels, including shake roofs, bark mulch, dry grass and firewood piles, predicted low humidity and breezy conditions, a single spark can easily ignite fuels and cause a dangerous fire.

Individuals whose fireworks cause injury or damage may be held liable for the cost, not only of the damage, but also of fire suppression.

In addition, most dogs are frightened by fireworks and may run away, creating a bad situation for families.

Be wise, be safe, be responsible.

If you must use fireworks, use only legal ones, supervised by adults, with a hose nearby, disposed of in a bucket of water.

Or leave the fireworks to the professionals and enjoy the Pilot Butte Fireworks show, 10 pm on July 4th.
