The Bend Fire Department Has New Thermal Imaging Cameras

Bend, Ore. – The Bend Fire Department has new thermal imaging cameras sensitive enough to distinguish the changing shape of the meow of a cat in a cloud of smoke.

“Remarkable”, says Bend Fire Chief Dave Howe.

The cameras were obtained recently through a grant from Florida nonprofit, The Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation for three FLIR K-55’s which Bend Fire sought through a grant application, according to Howe.

According to Howe, the camera can sense the difference in temperature between a person or animal and the environment around it.
