Bend Senior Center Looks Toward Expansion

Bend, Ore. – The Bend Park & Recreation District is set to award a contract for the design of an expansion of the Bend Senior Center.

The Bend Senior Center — the district is now calling the facility the Larkspur Center — would expand from 14,000 square feet to around 53,000 square feet.

District staff has recommended the park board, at its meeting tonight, approve a $1.58 million contract with Barker Rinker Seacat Architecture of Denver to design the expanded facility and manage its construction. The district has allocated a total of $16.5 million for design and construction of the facility.

The expansion would be on undeveloped land to the southwest of the existing senior center, located in Larkspur Park near the corner of Reed Market Road and Southeast 15th Street. The district does not expect to award a contract for construction until early 2018.

Much of the expansion would be dedicated to improved fitness facilities.

The expanded senior center is to include a warm-water pool, a multipurpose gymnasium and a track for indoor walking and jogging.

The district expects to cover around $11.1 million of the cost of expansion from property tax revenues and system development charges. The remaining $5.4 million is likely to come from a loan, as the district did with the construction of Juniper Swim & Fitness Center.

The senior center opened in 2001 and was expanded by approximately 3,600 square feet in 2004.
