Bend, Ore. – Locals residents Wednesday evening turned up to meet with the Bend Park & Recreation District to consider the general concept of a recreation center.
About 40 people turned out and are warming up to the idea of developing a west-side indoor/outdoor center. In fact, the district will be conducting a needs assessment later this fall, to determine what type of recreation facility the public may want.
District officials say they envision one similar to the popular Juniper Swim & Fitness Center, which they say is operating at capacity most of the time.
Regardless of location, participants emphasized the need for the new facility to be accessible by transit, and provide parking for those who drive, and not exacerbate existing traffic issues.
In addition, residents who attended the meeting said that the cost of building a facility is likely a barrier – suggesting the community might be resistant to approving a new bond measure.
