Volunteers Needed At Chimps Inc. Animal Sanctuary in Bend!

Bend, Ore. – Hidden in the back roads of Tumalo is something you wouldn’t expect to find in Bend – a chimpanzee sanctuary.

Chimps, Inc. is home to 7 chimpanzees and Linky, a Canadian Lynx. The sanctuary was started over 20 years ago by Founder and President Lesley Day. The chimps are rescues that were either former pets or were used in the entertainment industry.

These wonderful creatures now have a beautiful home which include aerial tunnels, indoor and outdoor habitats and an organic garden to live out the rest of their lives.

KBNW’s Abby Taylor paid a visit to celebrate Topo, the alpha male’s 51st birthday! This playful and gentle birthday boy is the sanctuary’s oldest chimp. He was rescued from horrible conditions in upstate New York and became the first resident of the sanctuary in 1995.

The chimps made fast friends with Abby – fascinated by her shoes, nails and even looking at photos in her iPhone with her!

Chimps, Inc. is always in need of Volunteers and donations, with several ways for you to get involved.

Visit their Facebook page to stay up-to-date on the lives of these amazing creatures.
