KGO-TV(SAN FRANCISCO) — Multiple mosques in California have reported receiving threatening anti-Muslim letters this week that say President-elect Donald Trump would do to Muslims “what Hitler did to the Jews.”

The Evergreen Islamic Center in San Jose was one of the mosques to receive the handwritten and photocopied letter addressed to the “Children of Satan,” the San Francisco Bay Area chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said.

The letter, signed “Americans for a Better Way,” refers to Muslims as “a vile and filfthy people” and also said the president-elect was “going to cleanse America and make it shine again.”

The Islamic Center of Long Beach and the Islamic Center of Claremont also reported receiving the letters, the greater Los Angeles area chapter of CAIR said.

Zahra Billoo, executive director of CAIR-SFBA, told ABC News that the organization was in contact with law enforcement and local elected officials to help keep the Muslim community safe. She added that officials acted quickly and were “taking this matter very seriously.”

She said that what was needed now after a “very divisive election cycle” was “leadership, one that specifically sends messages of unity,” but added that local elected officials were standing with the Muslim community.

“What we’ve heard that’s been really heartening has been from Bay Area elected officials saying that despite the campaign, despite the election rhetoric that they stand with their neighbors of various groups and communities, that they will not tolerate hate crimes or hate incidents,” Billoo said to ABC News.
