Cougar shot following Pet-Attack Spree

La Pine, Ore. – Deschutes County deputies shot and killed a cougar in La Pine early Saturday morning at a home less than one quarter mile from a day care, according to a Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office press release.

Deputies were called to a home on Glenwood Drive shortly after midnight Jan. 21 by a resident who believed that a cougar that had attacked a dog was hiding under the deck. It was, and officers shot it.

The incident was the third cougar-related pet attack near La Pine investigated by the sheriff’s office within the space of a week.

The first attack happened near Coyote Road. The second attack occurred on Pine Forest Drive. A homeowner calling the family cat inside saw a cougar on the front porch with the dead pet, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies shot and killed the cat hiding under the deck Saturday morning because of the danger it posed to the community, according to the sheriff’s office. The home is less than a quarter mile from a day care and about one mile from Rosland Elementary School.
