Immigration and Our Central Oregon Economy

Bend, Ore. – With a new Presidential administration in office, what’s next for immigrants in our country and, specifically, our region? What social and financial ramifications might Central Oregon encounter, especially as it relates to the local economy?

On February 7th, join panelists Brad Porterfield, Preston Callicott and Dan Larsson along with key audience guests to discuss the possible realities ahead.

From workforce and education to ex-migration and even potential boycott of U.S. goods, the risks are lurking and palpable.

Consider the following questions:

• How will industries like tourism, tech and agriculture be affected? What losses and costs will businesses face, including those of immigrant entrepreneurs?
• With talks of cutting DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) and capping H1B visas (“higher education visas”), whose life could this change and what chain reaction might we see in our education and workforce?
• Will courts be back-logged from a lack of clear policy or reform? How will such a strain impact foreign and domestic detention centers?
• What will Bend and other cities do? Should Bend consider being a “sanctuary city”?
•Will there be services of compassion and assistance for families and businesses who find themselves impacted negatively?

Foreign Nationals (a.k.a., immigrants) have long been considered the foundation of our country and now the demographic reality of our existence economically. What opportunities for resolution, inclusivity and being prepared lie before us?
