A Bend Man Accidentally Shoots Close Friend

Bend, Ore. – A Bend man accidentally shot a friend while unloading a handgun Saturday evening, according to a Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office press release.

Shortly after 7 p.m., deputies responded to a report of an accidental gunshot wound at a home east of Bend near Skywagon Drive and Cougar Trail. They determined that 21-year-old Jullian Messner accidentally shot 22-year-old Trevor Rogers while trying to unload a semiautomatic handgun. Following treatment by medics, Rogers, also of Bend, was airlifted to St. Charles Medical Center, Bend, where, according to the release, was listed in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries.

Messner had released the magazine from the weapon, a 9-millimeter semiautomatic, and thought he had removed a round from the chamber.
He had not. Messner subsequently pulled the trigger and accidentally fired the weapon, hitting Rogers in the upper torso. Messner immediately called 911.

Neither man was impaired by drugs or alcohol, according to the sheriff’s office, and no criminal charges have been filed against Messner. However, the incident will be sent to the Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office for review.
