City Club Forum To Address Urban Boundary Growth

BEND, OR — The City Club of Bend will present three forums on the city’s Urban Growth Boundary remand and possible extension.

Bend City Councilor Victor Chudowsky is Chair of the UGB Remand Steering Committee. He will present the current approach, as well as the 2007 City decision that was rejected by the State.

“We have to be sure that we’re using all the land that’s available within the current boundary. There’s going to be some that doesn’t fit within the current boundary, and that’s where the expansion takes place.”

The City predicts an additional 30,000 residents in Bend by 2028.

With a current housing availability of less than 1%, Chudowski says that something has to be done in order to drive the market value back something the average worker can afford.

“If you make the median income in Bend, which is $66,000, you can afford a house that’s about $200,000. And if you ask anybody who’s out looking for a house or condo right now, there is nothing at that price.”

The first City Club Forum takes place Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at St. Charles.
