Another Cougar Sighting, This Time In Redmond

Redmond, Ore. – Today at approximately 2:30 p.m. deputies of the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the area of NE Yucca Avenue and NE 17th Street for a cougar sighting.

The person had been at her residence when she observed a cougar cross through her front yard then proceeded east into an area covered by trees and bushes between her residence and the residence immediately to the east of hers.

Deputies arrived in the area, conducted an extensive search of the indicated area but did not locate the cougar. An attempt to notify the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife was made to advise them of this cougar activity, but was not successful at the time.

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind citizens of our community that if you were to encounter a cougar do not run, but move slowly, keeping the animal in view as you move away from the area.

Additionally, should you locate a dead animal carcass do not disturb it, especially if you believe the animal to be a cougar kill. If there are confirmed cougar sightings in your area do not walk your dogs at night in that area.

It is recommended that residents keep outside lighting on in the areas where livestock is present to help deter cougar attacks. Supervise children and pets that are outside. If there is a perceived danger to the community from such wildlife as a cougar please notify law enforcement as soon as possible.
