Gas Prices Hit Highs For 2010
BEND, OR -- Gas prices in Oregon jumped up six cents in the past week, pushing the price at the pump to their highest levels this year. AAA-Oregon said statewide prices are now $2.87 a gallon, with the national average up six cents as well to $2.76. AAA spokeswoman Marie Dodds said it's typical to see gas prices rise as we get closer to the spring and summer driving season. She added that the health of the economy and U.S. dollar is also affecting crude oil prices.
"Last week's jobs report showed that the economy is losing jobs at a much slower rate than in previous months," Dodds said. "The labor market is a primary indicator of overall economic health so any improvement in jobs data has a ripple effect throughout the economy, including oil prices. Increased economic activity boosts prices of oil and other energy stocks. As the recovery gains steam and people return to work and resume their normal activities, such as travel, demand for gasoline improves as well. In the short term, whenever signs emerge the economic recovery is at long last taking hold, oil prices and gasoline prices will drift upwards."
Oregon has the 7th most expensive gas in the nation. Hawaii, Alaska, California, Washington and New York are currently the five most expensive.
Diesel prices are climbing as well, jumping up four cents in the past week to $2.94.
