Firefighters Encourage Smoke Alarm Check This Weekend
BEND, OR -- Central Oregon firefighters are reminding everyone this weekend to check the smoke alarm in your home as we return to Daylight Savings Time Sunday. Even though all battery operated smoke alarms sold in Oregon now are required to have a 10 year lithium battery, it is a good idea to make sure they are working properly. Here are a few reminders as you check your smoke detector:
· Test and clean smoke alarms monthly
· Replace smoke alarms 10 years old or older with new alarms
· Install alarms on every level of your home, outside each sleeping area and in every bedroom
· Have a home fire escape plan and practice it regularly with the entire family
· Alarms should never be disconnected or batteries removed for ANY reason
Smoke alarms with alkaline batteries DO need to have the batteries changed at least annually. If you need a smoke alarm, but can't afford one, many fire agencies throughout Central Oregon can provide smoke alarms at little or no cost.
