(NEW YORK) — The National Hockey League announced its All-Star Game captains on Saturday, with one surprising name among them.
Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane, Florida Panthers forward Jaromir Jagr and Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals will all serve as captains at the Jan. 31 exhibition. The fourth captain, chosen to represent the Pacific Division, was Arizona Coyotes’ John Scott.
The league held a fan vote from Dec. 1 to Jan. 1 to select a player from each division who will captain a team in the new three-on-three tournament format for the All-Star Game.
Kane leads the league with 56 points, Jagr is a nine-time All-Star and Ovechkin is the all-time leading scorer among Russian players and plays for one of the top teams in the league. Scott, however, has just one assist this year, and only five goals and six assists in his career.
Scott, a 33-year-old, 6-foot-8 inch and 260 pound enforcer, has been waived three times by the Coyotes just this year, and spend time in the American Hockey League.
Fans rallied around Scott, using the hashtag #VoteJohnScott, to send him to his first All-Star Game.
The remainder of the All-Star rosters will be announced on Jan. 6.
