Boehner Forms Group to Address Surge of Kids Crossing Border

Alex Wong/Getty Images(WASHINGTON) — House Speaker John Boehner has formed a Republican working group to address the huge flow of unaccompanied minor children, and adults with children, crossing the border into the U.S.

The group, announced on Tuesday, will be led by Rep. Kay Granger, R-Texas.

“The president has allowed a national security and humanitarian crisis to develop on the U.S. southern border,” Boehner said in a statement. “There are two imperatives here: protect those children and secure our border.”

The Ohio Republican noted that he sent a letter to President Obama last week outlining ways to achieve these two goals.

“The president has failed to take the necessary steps to address this crisis, so today I’ve decided to form a working group to advise us and keep lawmakers informed on the situation down there,” Boehner said.

Aside from Granger, the group will include Reps. John Carter of Texas, Mario Diaz-Balart of Florida, Bob Goodlatte of Virginia, Mike McCaul of Texas, Steve Pearce of New Mexico and Matt Salmon of Arizona.
