(NEW YORK) — Khloé Kardashian is getting a lot of heat on Instagram for a couple of photos showing the Keeping Up with the Kardashians star wearing a Native American Headdress.
During niece North West’s Coachella-themed first birthday party, dubbed “Kidchella,” this past Saturday, the 29-year-old was photographed wearing a Native American war bonnet. The picture, captioned “Kidchella,” was posted on stepsister Kylie Jenner’s Instagram.
In another photo that appeared on Khloé’s Instagram page, she’s seen sitting next to a tepee with her legs crossed and her eyes closed. It’s captioned, “Ray of clouds. Chirping of birds. Gurgling of water. Granting desire. One with water. #Kidchella my first Coachella!!!”
Cliff Matias, cultural director of the Redhawk Native American Arts Council, calls the pictures “insensitive,” according to the New York Post.
The newspaper goes on to quote Matias as saying, “It’s really sad that people who are celebrities don’t take the responsibility and the understanding that they are trendsetters and they influence people, especially young people.” He insists, “It’s a responsibility that I don’t think a lot of them acknowledge that they have.”
“I just can’t believe she would be that insensitive to think it was OK to wear that war bonnet at a kids’ party,” he goes on to say, concluding, “Now you have a celebrity at a kids’ party creating a whole new generation of insensitive thinking.”
A rep for Kardashian had no comment.
