Older Motorists Willing to Talk About Limiting Their Driving

iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — Have you had the talk with your parents? You know, the one when you have to break the news that they’ve gotten too old to drive?

Insurance giant Liberty Mutual says that most elderly Americans are ready to have the talk with their adult children, contrary to what a lot of people think.

Its survey reveals that 84 percent of senior drivers are at least willing to sit down and listen to reasons why they should relinquish the car keys or at the very least, scale back their time behind the wheel.

Just the same, only a handful of older motorists say that their children have had the talk with them.

Liberty Mutual questioned over 1,000 Americans 75 and older and discovered that 58 percent are still driving and close to 80 percent of that group do it regularly even with declining physical abilities.

Meanwhile, 55 percent of adult children admit to having concerns about their elderly parents driving, although less than one in four have actually spoken to their folks about it.
