UN Mission in Iraq Reports Over 1,000 Killed in Iraq Since Advance of ISIS

iStockphoto/Thinkstock(WASHINGTON) — New information from the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq on Tuesday indicated that over 1,000 people in Iraq were killed between June 5 and June 22 since the advance of militant group the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.

The United Nations noted 757 civilians were killed and 599 injured in the provinces of Nineveh, Diyala and Salah al-Din. Among those are a number of “summary executions and extra-judicial killings” in the northern regions. An additional 318 individuals were killed and 590 injured in Baghdad and areas south.

The U.N. also notes that abductions continue to be reported, with one recent case featuring 48 Turkish citizens taken from the Turkish consulate in Mosul, when ISIS captured the city.
