BEND, OR — The Oregon State Marine Board, Oregon State Police and law enforcement across the state will participate in Operation Dry Water Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The national effort focuses on reducing the number of accidents and fatalities related to intoxicated boating. Operation Dry Water also works to brings awareness and education to recreational boaters about the dangers of alcohol and drug use on the water.
OSMB's Ashley Massey said boating under the influence of drugs and alcohol continues to be a major problem across Oregon and the nation.
"U.S. Coast Guard data reveals that alcohol is the primary contributing factor in recreational boating fatalities. Intoxicated boat operators and passengers run a significantly greater risk of being involved in a fatal boating accident."
In Oregon, those convicted of boating under the influence could face jail time, $6,250 in fines, and loss of boating or even driving privileges.
