Tiger Shoots 3-Over in Return to Golf

Rob Carr/Getty Images(BETHESDA, Md.) — For the first time in three months, Tiger Woods was back on the golf course. Woods shot a 3-over 74 in the opening round of the Quicken Loans National at Congressional Country Club on Thursday.

“I was trying to get the numbers and the feel,” said Woods. “That didn’t start happening until midway through my front nine.”

Woods had seven bogeys through his first 12 holes but closed with three birdies in his final six. It was the competitive round for the 14-time champion since having surgery on his back in March. Woods’ last PGA Tour event was the World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship at Doral. He finished in 25th place with a 5-over performance.

The first round 74 is the highest score for Woods at the tournament. Only once has he gone on to win an event after shooting so high, the 2005 Masters when he opened with a 74. Greg Chalmers leads the field after a first round 66, one-shot better than Ricky Barnes and Freddie Jacobson.
