(1) Serena Williams Ousted in 3rd Round at Wimbledon

The top-seeded Williams, who lost before the quarterfinals in the previous two Grand Slams this year, lost in the third round at Wimbledon Saturday, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 to 25th-seeded Alize Cornet.

“I felt I was playing pretty well,” Williams said. “I worked really hard coming into this event. Sometimes it happens. You work hard — maybe it’s not for today, it’s for tomorrow.”

Williams, a five-time Wimbledon champion, suffered her earliest exit at the All England Club since 2005.

“If I’m not playing a great, great match, these girls, when they play me, they play as if they’re on the ATP Tour, and then they play other girls completely different,” Williams said. “It’s never easy being in my shoes.”

It’s the second time Williams lost to Cornet this year. The 24-year-old French woman beat Williams at the Dubai Champinships in February.
