BEND, OR — The Deschutes National Forest and Discover Your Forest invite the public to Newberry National Volcanic Monument for a series of lectures on Friday and Saturday nights through the 2014 summer season.

The only Thursday event, July 3, 2014, will feature a Forest Service Interpretive Ranger discussing how Central Oregon’s landscape was transformed by Newberry Volcano. This first lecture in the series will take place at Paul’s Place Amphitheater at the Big Obsidian Flow Day Use Area from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Several speakers are slated for the summer in a variety of locations on the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. The lectures will highlight the unique geology of the area, aquatic and wildlife species living on the monument, the history of Smokey Bear and wildfire, the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act and more.

The lecture series is free, but recreation fees are required where posted on the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. Programs will be held weather permitting.
