Wesley Sneijder smashed a shot from outside the penalty box into the back of the net in the 88th minute when the ball was headed to him off a corner.

The Dutch earned a penalty kick in the second minute of stoppage time when Arjen Robben was tripped up in the box by Rafael Marquez. Robben asked teammate Klaas-Jan Huntelaar if he wanted to take the kick, and Huntelaar obliged, making the kick and giving Holland the lead for good.

“You don’t know when your chance will come, but it was today, and so you grab it with both hands,” Huntelaar said, who was substituted in for Robert van Persie in the 76th minute. “And it was fantastic.”

Mexico has now lost in the Round of 16 in their last six World Cups.

Meanwhile, the Netherlands advance to the quarterfinals, where they’ll meet Costa Rica on Saturday. The match is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Eastern. You can watch that on ESPN.
