Ranchers Impacted By Wolves Could Receive Funds

SALEM, OR – Ranchers east of the Cascades could be eligible for compensation for losses of livestock by wolves, and the latest on a new grant program that’s also designed to prevent future attacks.  The state is distributing $150,830 to eight counties east of the Cascades.  But the money isn’t solely to compensate ranchers for lost or injured livestock.  70% will go toward proactive and non-lethal efforts to prevent livestock and wolf interactions in areas known to have wolves.

Crook County will receive $3,000 – the only recipient county in our tri-county area.
90% of the grant is headed to Wallowa, Umatilla and Baker counties – the three experiencing the bulk of the state’s wolf activity.
