Serena Williams Pulls Out of Wimbledon; Sharapova, Nadal Eliminated

Comstock/Thinkstock(LONDON) — Serena and Venus Williams pulled out of their doubles match at Wimbledon on Wednesday against Kristina Barrois and Stefanie Voegele, after Serena was diagnosed with a viral illness.

“I am heartbroken I’m not able to continue in the tournament,” Serena said in a statement. “I thought I could rally this morning, because I really wanted to compete, but this bug just got the best of me.”

In women’s singles competition, Maria Sharapova was ousted from the fourth round in three sets by Angelique Kerber, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4.

On the men’s side, 14-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal fell to 19-year-old Nick Kyrgios of Australia in four sets, 7-6, 5-7, 7-6, 6-3.
